“You examine the Scriptures carefully because you suppose that in them you have eternal life. Yet they testify about me.” John 5:39
In the above passage of scripture, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and at the time the only scriptures available to search carefully, were what was written in the Old Testament. If the examples of the Patriarchs and the prophecies of the Messiah from the Major and Minor prophets testified about Jesus, then we should all be focusing on what Jesus testified concerning Himself. If the Old Testament is the Testimony about Jesus, then the New Testament is the Testimony of Jesus!
Rev 19:10 “And I fell before his feet to worship him. And he said to me, “See that you not do this! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers that hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
Rev 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of THEIR testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.”
Your lamp is your testimony, and like a witness, your testimony is the declaration of what you’ve seen and heard.
Matt 13:17 “For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
John 5:34-36 “Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light. But I have a testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me.”
The oil to light that lamp is Truth. Truth is the Word of God the Testimony ABOUT Jesus and OF Jesus.
Act 10:42-44 “And He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that He is the One appointed by God to judge the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard his message.”
Your light is produced by the understanding of the revelation of this Truth, in its application.
2 Peter 1:19 “And we have the more certain prophetic word, to which you do well taking heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until this day shall have dawned and the morning star shall have arisen in your hearts…”
1 Pet 1:13 “Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
Matt 25:1-13 “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man comes.”
I bet this makes a lot more sense now, after reading the scriptures that have been presented. Jesus is our Bridegroom!
We should all pay closer attention to the instruction He gave us- all in those Letters in Red.
