Exposing The Oneness Doctrine

Jesus came to reconcile humanity to God the Father, repairing the separation caused by sin. Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus acts as the mediator who restores this broken relationship, allowing believers to have direct access to God. As the “Last Adam,” He reversed the separation caused by disobedience, offering forgiveness and restoration to our relationship with God the Father. Jesus functions as the way to the Father by enabling adoption and access to Him. It is through the Son of God, that the Father reveals His will and His character to His people.

2 Cor 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

1Pet 3:18  For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit,

If you’re not familiar with the Oneness doctrine; it’s a belief that Jesus the Son of God, IS the Father, and I’m going to prayerfully and meticulously present key scriptures for you that prove that THIS, like so many others, is indeed a false doctrine. The Scriptures show us that Jesus and the Father are not the same person, but two distinct persons within the Godhead—along with the Holy Spirit—sharing the same divine nature. While they act in perfect unity, the Father is the sender and the Son is the sent.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17  For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

Before we delve in any deeper, I would like to break something down for you that I believe will help you gain a bit more clarity when it comes to the Godhead. The word used 3101 times in the Old Testament to represent the word God is Elohim or ‘ĕlôhı̂ym H430, and it is a plural word ONLY in Hebrew that means: rulers, judges or divine ones. The singular form of this word is ‘ĕlôahh H433. So, keep in mind, the very word to describe God in the Old Testament is plural. Many mistake the word God as a name or title used to describe the Father, when it is in fact a word that describes the governance and authority of the Godhead comprised of The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When we read scriptures that say “The Lord our God is one” (Deut 6:4) it is no different than saying; the two shall become one, or Parliament is one, or Congress is one, meaning they are united as one with no division, operating in conjunction with one another in complete unity of purpose. Here are eight examples:

John 17:11 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one.

John 17:21  so that they may all be one. Just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me.

John 17:22  I have given them the glory that you gave me, so that they may be one, just as we are one.

1 Cor 6:17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.

John 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you.

Rom 12:5 so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another.

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

1John 5:7  For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one

Allow me to point out a very simple, yet telling fact about the verbiage used in this verse below. This verse is the very building block those that follow the Oneness Doctrine use to justify their belief that Jesus IS the Father.

John 10:30 I and My Father are one.

Do you notice the use of the word “are” and not “am” in this verse? The word “are” in Greek is esmen G2070, and it is a first person plural word, as we can see the author of John uses in John 8:33, 9:28 and 17:22. “We are Abraham’s seed” and “We are Moses’ disciples” and “even as we are one“. The word “am” (eimi G1510) is a first person singular present indicative in Greek. We see the author of John use it many places like in John 3:28  Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

Now, let us move on to the topic of verses that clearly show us that the Father and Jesus had separate wills while Jesus was in the flesh.

John 5:30 “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me”.

Luke 22:42  “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not My will, but yours be done“.

Matt 26:39 “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt“.

John 6:38: “For I came down from heaven, not to do My own will but the will of Him who sent me“.

These verses show the distinction between Jesus’s human will (desiring to avoid suffering) and his divine will (that was to be aligned with the Father), demonstrating his true humanity.

Heb 5:8 Though He was a Son, He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. (The Father did NOT need to learn obedience).

Here are some scripture that show Jesus specifically making a distinction between Himself and the Father.

John 14:28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I”

John 14:6 Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Mat 20:23  “You will indeed drink My cup,” Jesus said. “But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom My Father has prepared them.”

Mark 13:32 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.

John 8:16-18  But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me. Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. I am one who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”

John 16:23  And in that day ye shall ask Me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you.

Jesus the Son of God is seated at the right hand of the Father, and the Father has given all things into His hand, including all authority.

Rom 8:34  Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God—and He is interceding for us.

1Pet 3:22  who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him.

Mat 22:44  ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”

Act 2:32-33  This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Rev 3:21  To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.

John 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

Mat 11:27  All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

John 13:3  Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.

Mat 28:18  Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

John 5:22  Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son

John 5:26-27  For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man

A question I like to ask those that follow the Oneness doctrine is: Who was speaking from heaven when Jesus was baptized by John? Was it Jesus throwing His voice?

Mat 3:17  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

As you can clearly see, that thinking is ridiculous and unbiblical.

If you omit or deny the very purpose that Christ was sent to die for our sins, you miss the entire message of the Gospel. Jesus came to reconcile us to the Father, and to stand as mediator between us and the Father in Heaven.

Heb 9:15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

I honestly believe enough scripture, coupled with self evident truths has been presented to thoroughly disprove the false teachings of the Oneness Doctrine. Please study these verses for yourself and find the many other verses that coincide with the ones that have been presented, to make a righteous judgment concerning this important topic.
