Adam

‘âdâm

Man=H120 ‘âdâm: it means red in color.
This word is translated as “man” men or mankind, 541 times in the Old Testament.

Adam=H121 ‘âdâm: it means made red.

This article is going to be an examination of the Biblical character Adam.

Let me first point out that the word man is used 9 different times in the book of Genesis before the word Adam even arrives on the scene in chapter 2:18. The word Adam shows up out of nowhere and with no introduction at all, other than the need for a HELP to be provided for man in order to not be alone, as described in the verse before it.

The word man first appears in the Bible in Genesis 1:26.

Gen 1:26  God said “We will make man in Our image and likeness; to have dominion over the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, the cattle upon the land and every moving thing that moves upon the earth.”

The word Adam first appears in the Bible in Genesis 2:19 and it’s used twice in the same verse.

Gen 2:19  From out of land the Lord God formed all that was living on the land, and every fowl of the air; they were brought among Adam, to see which could be called. All which Adam called among the living souls; they were named.

This is how this verse accurately reads in the original Hebrew. Notice that it says all that God had created upon the Land, that had living souls had been brought among Adam, to watch for which would COME/OBEY when they were CALLED, and THOSE that could or would be CALLED among the living, THEY were the ones NAMED.

If you look closely at the words used in verse Gen 2:19; God had given the name Adam to the race of mankind that HE called and named; and it means made RED. So the ones that would or could be called, (meaning: the ones who would COME/OBEY when called) are THOSE given a NAME.

So, we know the first of mankind was called and named Adam or made RED, and we don’t know if it is speaking of a singular person or if Adam is the word used to describe all those made living souls by the breath of God. We DO know however, that man is referred to as Adam once attention has been drawn to the isolated and lonely condition of man, and then it’s made clear, that it is NOT GOOD in the eyes of God for man to be alone. Then in the very next verse man is referred to as Adam for the very first time, meaning “one made RED” obviously by the breath of God. By the way, blood, when it’s exposed to Air/Breath, does become red. Just thought I’d throw that in there for you to ponder. ~

Gen 2:7  And the LORD God formed man out of the clay of the land, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

I’d like to draw your attention to these three words called, named and life.

Called= qârâ’ H7121: to call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim.

Named= shêm H8034: a name, reputation, fame, glory.

Life= chay H2416: living, alive (adjective) or green (vegetation)

One theme that’s played out consistently with these words is this; something is first called and then named. Let me give you an example: The first time the word “called” is used in the Bible is in Genesis 1:5.

Gen 1:5  And God called the light, Day, and the darkness He called, Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. *Day is light’s name.

Gen 1:8  And God called the firmament, Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. *Heaven is the firmament’s name.

Gen 1:10  And God called the land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas: and God saw that it was good. *Earth is the land’s name and Seas is the waters name.

So, God has “called” and “named” 5 things so far in Genesis chapter 1:5-10. They are the light, darkness, firmament, land and the waters. They are given the names Day, Night, Heaven, Earth and Sea.

By the time we get to the sixth calling and naming in the Bible, it’s in Genesis 2:19 and it’s Adam being named by God. His “calling” must have been in Gen 2:16, when the Lord God gave man his first command. The 6th naming in verse Gen 2:19 in Hebrew that says “All that were called of Adam, THEY were named“. This verse is worded in such a way that it invokes the image of; whatever living souls responded among Adam/mankind, to being CALLED, they were the ones given a name. The first things named in the Bible are not people, until the 6th calling and naming of Adam.

Gen 2:10 A river came out of Eden and saturated the Garden from these divisions, and it came to be four heads.

Gen 2:11 Named first is Pison/Increase, it surrounds all of the land of Havilah where there is gold.

Gen 2:12 The gold of it’s land is good: also bdellium and precious stones.

Gen 2:13 Named second is the river Gihon/bursting over: it encompasses all of the land of Cush.

Gen 2:14 Named third is the river Hiddekel/rapid: it flows out towards the East of Assyria. The fourth river is Euphrates/multiplied fruitfulness.

Gen 2:15 The Lord God TOOK man and stationed him in the Garden of Eden to tend it and keep it.
Gen 2:16 Then the Lord God gave a command to the man saying “From out of all the trees of the garden eat and be fed.
Gen 2:17 But from out of the trees that have knowledge of good and evil, do not eat from these, because the day you eat from them you will die the death.”

Gen 2:19  From out of land the Lord God formed all that was living on the land, and every fowl of the air; they were brought among Adam, to see which could be called. All which Adam called among the living souls; they were named. (6th calling and naming)

Gen 3:20  And Adam called his wife, and named her Eve; because she was the mother of all living. (7th calling and naming)

Okay, let’s stop for a second and examine this verse Gen 3:20, the Seventh calling.

It says that Adam named the woman, Eve, which is chavvâh in Hebrew and means: the state of being alive, or living, BECAUSE she was the mother of ALL LIVING. Now Adam was living, and there was no offspring mentioned as of yet, so Adam is included in the statement of “ALL living”. All means ALL folks. Eve was given her name because she was MADE the Mother of ALL LIVING upon the Earth BY GOD, to be a HELP, because at this point in the story there are no others things that have been created, that are considered LIVING SOULS for Eve to be a Mother to, other than Adam and all the animals and fish.

Now, the word for LAND, ground or field in Hebrew is ‘ădâmâh H127, so we can get an idea where the word man comes from and the name Adam comes from. Let’s take a deeper look at where the word Eve comes from; it’s the word translated as LIVING or LIFE in Gen 3:20; it’s chay H2416 and it means: living, or alive.

The word “calling” by definition in Hebrew means: to call to oneself or to call out unto, invite or commission someone. So it’s to understand that it’s in the RESPONDING to the CALLING, that you are given a name. We see those made red by God are called Adam, and one of them performs the first calling and naming of mankind in Gen 3:20, after the creation of Woman to be man’s Help and Adam’s calling and naming of Eve.

Adam’s name appears right after God gives man the commend to obey and listen to:

Gen 2:16-17  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die

So, right after the first command from God is given to mankind in verses 16 and 17; the very next verse, is God providing man with accountability for THAT command.

Eve was Adam’s first spiritual task from God. The very purpose the command is given to Adam, was for the protection from DEATH entering into the Garden. God had placed a man within this enclosure to tend and keep it, which means serve and protect in Hebrew.

Eve was not only created to be man’s help to accomplish the task of governing by protecting and serving all the living souls that God had created upon the Earth; Eve was WHO Adam was CALLED to serve and protect FIRST from the DEATH the Lord God warned about, due to disobedience; and Adam was responsible to SERVE her and PROTECT her because Eve was the FIRST taken from man, and because man was going to want her back.

Gen 2:18  And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a help to be before him.

Gen 2:20 Adam had called and named all of the cattle, the fowls of the air, and everything *living on the land. Adam could not find a help among those that could be seen.

Gen 2:21 The Lord God made a deep sleep fall upon Adam; and while asleep, He TOOK out one from among his ribs and closed up the flesh underneath it.
Gen 2:22 Then the rib that the Lord God TOOK from out of man, He made WOMAN to enter in unto the man.
Gen 2:23 Adam said “This one was cut out from the bone of bones and the flesh of flesh; this one is called WOMAN, because this one was TAKEN out of man.

The word Woman is ‘ishshâh H802 and it means: from a specific or certain man, ‘ı̂ysh H376.

In these 4 verses above, there are word differences that I’d like to point out and think are very important to the understanding of Adam. I’m a Hebrew and Greek theologian, so I see wording before I see anything, so let’s take a look at what I’m talking about:

Verse 21 says that God made a deep sleep fall upon Adam (a people); they are the ones that God made red by the breath of LIFE and named Adam.

Verse 22 says the rib/beam the Lord God TOOK, was out of man, it doesn’t say Adam specifically, like in the verse before it. It also says that God made the WOMAN to enter in unto the man and not unto Adam, which is the name given to mankind that are called and named by God. So God made Adam (those made red) to fall into a deep trance like state and while they were in this state, God cut out and separated a rib/beam from out of mankind, in order to enter back unto mankind.

Then we see in verse 23, Adam (a people) SAY “this one was cut out from the bone of bones and the flesh of flesh” and then Adam (the people) name her WOMAN, saying its because this one was TAKEN out of ‘ı̂ysh man. Right here, this word ‘ı̂ysh is set apart from the word previously used for man.

Adam is a kind, a people named by God, and the man the Lord God TOOK the rib from is a certain one, Let’s look closer. The word for man thus far has been ‘âdâm, H120 named after the LAND, but now there is this word ‘ı̂ysh H376 introduced for man at the tail end of verse 23, that get’s it’s root from the word ‘ĕnôsh H582 that means: a man, a mortal man, a person. So, there is significance as to why it’s written this way. Adam is the name for mankind, and the word man H120 and this word man H582, are describing two different kinds of humans; the spiritually ALIVE, and those that are spiritually DEAD. The Lord God DID warn about how DEATH would be the result of man’s disobedience.

The first time we see this new word for man, ‘ı̂ysh H376, is at the tail end of Genesis 2:23. The next time we see it used, is in the verse that follows it.

Gen 2:24 And according to this; man/‘ı̂ysh shall be loosened from his father and mother, to join together with woman: in order to become one flesh.

It appears that at this point, mankind has already been separated by God and referred to or called and named with two different names, man H120 meaning those from the Land and man H376, meaning a certain or specific one among named men.

So, the next command to this human kind after the command to SERVE and PROTECT through man’s obedience to not partake of the tree that causes DEATH, is found in Gen 2:24 and it was specifically to the named men only. It is that these men are to be loosened or released from their father and mother to join together with a woman to create one new flesh out of the two.

Let me show you how much these words called and named together bring clarity to the narrative of what is going on in Hebrew. The next time we see the words “called” and “named” together in the Bible; is in Genesis 4:17, showing us the contrast of following the example of God’s purpose of mankind’s calling and “naming“, by laying out the pattern of Cain’s offspring. Let’s take a look at how the SEED OF CAIN chooses to use their power for “calling” and “naming” upon the earth, and what THEY choose to call and name FIRST after being sent away from the presence of the Lord God and marked upon the Earth.

Gen 4:17 Cain knew a wife that conceived and gave birth to Enoch: and built a guarded city, and he called and named the guarded city and the name of his son, Enoch.

The word in Hebrew used here for CITY is ‛ı̂yr / ‛âr or ‛âyar and it means: A city or town that has appointed guards that keep it safe from outsiders. This is the first time the word CITY is used in the Bible, and it’s not by accident that it’s Cain that builds the first of it’s kind. So Cain gets marked by God and sent away from His Presence and the first thing Cain does; is builds a fortified city for himself and his Seed to dwell upon the Earth and calls and names both the city and his son Enoch, which means INITIATED and DEDICATED.

Did you catch that? It doesn’t say that Cain called and named his first born son; it says “Cain knew a wife that conceived and gave birth to Enoch” there is no calling or naming yet. THEN Cain builds a guarded city; obviously for his new offspring in the land of Nod, and THEN he names the city and his son Enoch with means initiated and dedicated. Initiated, meaning established and started, and dedicated, as in WHO you created it for or on behalf of.

Both the Seed of Cain and the Seed of Seth have the ability to call and name upon the Earth and both have a son they have named Enoch; but it’s WHO Enoch is initiated FOR and dedicated TO that sets them apart from each other. Let me explain.

Cain and his seed are TAKERS, they take unto themselves, and the seed of Seth, call unto themselves.

Gen 3:22  And the LORD God said, Behold, man has become as one with us, in knowing good and evil: and now he will try to put forth his hand, and take unto himself also of the tree of life, to eat of it, and live for ever: (there is that word LIFE or LIVING again)

Gen 6:2  The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took for themselves women from which they chose.

The sons of God are not celestial beings, they are the first named and called sons of God upon the Earth. These sons named and called by God were taking unto themselves women that THEY CHOSE, and not who God chose, so that’s why you will start to see a running theme of GOD choosing WHO a person’s woman is to be, in order for them to have “appointed” seed among the NAMED and CALLED of God.

Seth and his seed, as you will soon be shown; are those that like their Creator, they CALL and Name. They are the CALLERS that call unto themselves. Do you understand the difference between a caller and a taker? Watch I’ll show you?

From Genesis 4:17 on all the way through the mentioning of the offspring of Cain; you will notice the words “bore” or “bare” before each name, but NOT the words “called” and “named” together, like I’ll show you is used when speaking specifically about Seth and his seed.

Gen 4:19  And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. * Lamech is a seed of Cain, and there is no calling, just naming.

Gen 4:25  And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called and named him Seth: It is because God, she said, has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Gen 4:26  And Seth, to him also was born a son; and he called and named him Enos: and this was the beginning of those that were once defiled, being called by the NAME of the LORD.

Enos or ‘ĕnôsh H583 is another word that translates in Hebrew as man. Not made red, or from the Land like the words used before, but this is the name of specific living soul that is called and named, so it would signify what type of man he was.

Let me break down for you how Genesis Chapter 5 reads in Hebrew, starting with the verses.

Gen 5:1-2 This is the BOOK of the descendants of Adam in the days God created man, and in the *likeness of God He made them. Male and female He created them; and blessed them, and called and named them Adam in the days when they were created.

Did you catch that? BOTH males and females were called and named Adam. Now let’s look at the word “likeness“, demûth H1823 in Hebrew. This is a noun that’s feminine and it’s used 25 times in the OT, and this is it’s first time being used in the Bible. It’s the characteristics of Adam that are in the *likeness of their Creator. Can you see what they are? According to Genesis 5:2 they are being Male and Female, blessed and called. Let’s examine these 4 words; male, female, blessed and called, shall we?

Male zâkâr H2145 from the root word zâkar H2142 that means: to remember, recall, call to mind, bring to remembrance. *So those that remember the command/calling of God are God’s males.

Female neqêbâh H5347 from the root word nâqab H5344 that means: to cut out, to pluck out, to pierce, to puncture, to appoint, to be cut away from something, to be blasphemed or cursed.

Blessed bârak H1288 it means: to bless, to honor by recognition and respect, to kneel in respect to, to be blessed by someone or to bless one’s self or another.

Called qârâ’ H7121 once again it means: to call to oneself, call out to, recite, read, cry out, or proclaim

You’re probably noticing by now; that I’ve been color coding things. I’m doing this for you to be able to trace the seeds of Cain and the Seed of Seth, because Seth was the one that was appointed to Eve by God Himself, as a payment/compensation for Abel being TAKEN from her. Seth in Hebrew means “appointed compensation“.

Cain and his seed are the seeds of Adam, and all the seed produced from Seth are considered Her Seed, because God appointed to Eve another SEED as a replacement for Abel.

Cain and his seed are not mentioned at all in the 5th chapter of Genesis, because it’s a recording of the descendants of Adam that are the LIVING SOULS that are called of God and given a new title as the named men of God. Once we get to the 29th verse of chapter 5, we are introduced to the 10th seed from Adam, who is recognized only as a son from the line of Seth, and he is named Noah.

Noah= nôach H5146 it means: rest or resting place, or to have or be at peace. From now on in this article, the called and named men will be depicted in purple.

The Bible says this concerning Noah in Genesis Chapter 5:

Gen 5:29  And he called and named him Noah, saying, by this, shall he comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

Noah married the 10th seed of Cain; his daughter Namaah, (this info is found in the Book of Jubilees) and together they had three sons; Ham, Shem and Japheth.

Shem means: NAME and Noah gave him this name to represent the distinction of honor and authority that would come with the NAME of Shem among the living souls God had created upon the Earth.

Ham means: To be made Hot or to make Hot or Heated and for Noah to name his son this; there had to be signs that Ham was following after the footsteps of the seed of Cain, from his mother Namaah’s side, and named him accordingly. Based on the attention Ham tries to draw to the shameful state of his father Noah, while he was drunk and naked in his tent, and him calling his brothers to come and LOOK upon their father this way. I’d say Ham had the tendencies to heat up a situation with controversy.

Japheth means: opened unto or made room for, and it’s his SEED that make up the Gentiles of the earth. They make up those that respond to the CALLING of God, that are received into the tents of Shem and the NAME of God forever as the Bible says.

After the flood, the only surviving seed of Cain is Namaah, his daughter, and she gave birth to three sons, but only one is cursed upon the Earth to be the slave of slaves and be shamed among his future brethren.

The word shame or ashamed, shows up in the Bible the first time in Gen 2:25.

Gen 2:25 They were both naked, the man and woman and they were not *ashamed.

Shame= bûsh H954, it means: to put to shame, be ashamed, be shamed, be disconcerted, or be disappointed or disappointing.

The second time being shamed or ashamed is mentioned is in Exodus 32:1, when it’s talking about the Golden Calf.

Exodus 32:1 The people perceived that Moses was ashamed to descend from out of the mountain, and the people assembled together towards Aaron saying to him “Rise up and make a god who will go before us; because this one, Moses the man/’ı̂ysh that we followed up from the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.

So, as you can clearly see by now, there is a distinction between men of the Land and men of God.

When a man is NOT filled with the Spirit of God, he is operating in the nature of Adam, but when a man IS filled with the Spirit of God, he is operating in the divine nature of God.

Cain, when his countenance fell, it was due to the sin of jealousy because Abel his brother had earned the respect of God, by sacrificing one from among the LIVING SOULS he was commanded to serve and protect as a shepherd.

I hope you were able to follow along and I wasn’t all over the map with my break downs of words and their meanings/origins. Like Martin Luther is quoted as saying “Words are like children; the more attention you give them, the more they require”

I pray this article has given you a greater understanding of Adam. I know I have a greater understanding now.
